Becoming THE MAN!

In my “day” the saying always went “You’re the MAN!”  That is you are the one that others would turn to for the information they needed within your scope of expertise.  Today it is more that you are the man in the know.  This is especially true when it comes to your niche.  But HOW do you become the MAN?  The one that others turn to for help and information.  There are  a number of effective ways to position yourself as a thought leader in your niche without spending a fortune on marketing. The first step is to know your niche inside and out. What do your customers want and need most? What are their pain points, that is, their most important problems that they need to solve?

Customers are looking for solutions that actually work and offer good value for their money. They are constantly asking the question, “What’s in it for me?” With so many websites and businesses online, you need to answer that question from the moment they show up at your website or discover one of your products online.

Once you know what your niche needs, offer it to them. You can be done  in a various number of ways.  Make sure your website has information on every product and service you offer.  Include a Marketplace that links to every product.

Make sure your site looks professional, with an easy to use layout that is mobile-friendly. Your niche-related content must be worth taking the time to read. Just because it is free does not mean it should be junk. In fact, publishing impressive niche content regularly is a great way to position yourself as a thought leader --- THE MAN!

Use your site as a lead generation tool in order to build your email marketing list. In this way, you can communicate with your list on a regular basis, presenting your niche customers with information, products and services that will prove you know what you are talking about.

The products you promote can be yours, or affiliate products you are selling for a commission. They might also be Joint Venture (JV) products you are promoting to your list in exchange for your partner promoting your items to theirs.  It doesn’t really matter as long as they are quality offers.

In order to get people to sign up for a mailing list these days, you need to go beyond the free newsletter offer to a compelling special report registrants can download that will be packed with information (and links to buy products) related to your niche.  Aim for a broad topic most people interested in your niche will be eager to read, and even to pass on to others via email or social networks.

Working with JVs gives you other opportunities to show yourself as a thought leader. These include writing reviews of every product you sell as an affiliate or a partner.  JVs might also invite you to participate in an online webinar or interview you as an expert in your niche.  You might even get some guest blogging opportunities in which you write articles for some of the top blogs in your niche to show what you know.

One of the best ways to give yourself instant expertise is to write a book and publish it on Amazon. It doesn’t have to be an encyclopedia of everything you know about your niche. Many bestselling books are usually ones with How To somewhere in the title, offering real solutions to real problems for your readers.

Publish it as an e-book through the Kindle Digital Platform first. If there is enough demand, publish it in paperback as well. Get a great cover designed for as little as $5 on fiverr.com.

Becoming --- THE MAN --- a thought leader in your niche is easy if you give your prospects what they want and need, and show you are in the know about all the top products and services available, not just your own.  This may take some time and effort on your part but the results will be well worth whatever it takes.

The Times

Let’s pause for a moment from our usual business discussion and consider a few thoughts from our times and the situation that we may have to face.

“He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.”

With today’s population it is estimated that over 50% of those living are under the age of 30.  When you consider that every day that number will continue to increase you can certainly see the potential truth in the above quote.  Whoever has the power of youth behind their decisions and intentions will no doubt be able to accomplish much in this world.

We notice how everyday commercial firms attempt to influence the minds of the young into whatever product, service, or venture that they wish to promote.  We also see how governmental organizations will focus their attention on the younger population to obtain the “majority” of supporters.  This hasn’t changed for decades.

“The broad masses of a population are more amenable to the appeal of rhetoric than to any other force.”

The vast majority of the world’s population will be swayed by the prolific flow of words of promise than they will be by an invading army.  It has been demonstrated over and over that those who will voice (or pen) the winsome words that the vast majority are wanting to hear can be persuaded to follow those that have the implication of promise in their speech.

Empires and great nations have been toppled by the speeches of powerful men in the past and will no doubt be victim to the same means of destruction in the future.  The power and boldness of the spoken word can never be overlooked nor taken lightly.

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.”  “The greater the lie, the greater the chance that it will be believed.”

This has always been the case with humans.  If the winsome words that are being spoken are all false, the only way to have people accept them is to make sure that the lie is SO BIG that it would make most people feel that it MUST be true or why would anyone say something so ridicules?

Any yet look at people around us today.  Some are so desirous a change, wanting their circumstances to improve, that they are willing to believe whatever is told to them.  Those in politics make their living doing this.  They promise whatever the people want to hear knowing most often they are not going to be able to deliver what has been offered.

“All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach.”

Propaganda: The spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person is only going to be accepted if the people can understand what is being told to them.  This doesn’t differentiate between what are “ideas” or “information” intent on “helping” the institution, cause, or person from that which is a “rumor” that has the purpose of “injuring” an institution, cause, or person.

Whichever the case may be the propaganda must be grasped by the “least intelligent” of those to whom it is intended to affect.  This will aid tremendously with it being accepted and acted upon as was its intended purpose.

“The day of individual happiness has passed.”

Today it is very difficult to find someone that is truly happy.  Varying situations and conditions exist that work to produce just the opposite within individuals.  Even the attempts by governmental authorities to improve the conditions of their constituents is lacking in providing real happiness to those that they serve.  The time of people going to bed happy and satisfied with the way things are has surely become a thing of the past.

“I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator.”

It seems that very few put their real trust in God.  However, when their actions come under question they become very religious people.  Some would even agree with the quote shown above and apply it to their actions.  They truly conceive within their own minds that their actions are “in accordance with the will of” God!  Yet they commit serious atrocities against humankind and contribute to the devaluing of human life.  It’s almost unbelievable that they can think this way but sadly they do!  However they may reply:

“Who says I am not under the special protection of God?”

The rants of a mad man will always include the inevitable “fact” that he will claim that he is within his rights to conduct himself the way he does because “God is on” his side of any of the issues that are being brought forth.

Beyond all logical thinking the “conquer” will proclaim that all his actions are due to his being motivated to do the will of God.  Or that he views himself as the “instrument” that God is using to accomplish His will here upon this Earth.  And why shouldn’t he view himself this way when he feels that by his superior intellect he will prove himself to be right in all he does!

“It is always more difficult to fight against faith than against knowledge.”

Regardless of what a person has been taught he or she can be made to believe something entirely different by means of clever persuasion of the contrived falsehoods of man.  Against all reasonable logic a man can be made to think outlandish thoughts within his mind.  And he can be convinced to put these thoughts into actions that reflect a lack of sensible thinking by any reasonable individual.  And how could one reasoning in such a manner be able to get away with the atrocities that would be committed because of his preposterous thinking and his manipulation of humankind that is gullible enough to listen to his outrage?

“How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.”

Once an individual or group has decided that they will blindly follow the proposals of a mad man they have forsaken their own freedom of thought.  They choose to allow the actions and the thinking of another to guide them into whatever path of destruction that will be brought upon them.  They relinquish that valuable commodity of their right to think for themselves and place their future into the hands of those leading them.  Many of them doing so without truly understanding where this “leader” is taking them.

I started by stating that we would look at the times in which we are living and at a possible future that we may have to face by giving up our right to free will and having others think for us.  But in actuality ALL the quotes I included within this article were made by Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.

Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany’s Nazi Party, was one of the most powerful and notorious dictators of the 20th century.  Hitler capitalized on economic woes, popular discontent and political infighting to take absolute power in Germany beginning in 1933. Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939 led to the outbreak of World War II, and by 1941 Nazi forces had occupied much of Europe.  Hitler’s virulent anti-Semitism and obsessive pursuit of Aryan supremacy fueled the murder of some 6 million Jews, along with other victims of the Holocaust.  After the tide of war turned against him, Hitler committed suicide in a Berlin bunker in April 1945.” [www.history.com]

Could the world be heading for a similar situation in our times?  Hopefully, men will have learned from history and will not allow such a thing to happen again.  However, reconsider the quotes I have included above and you will note that they can very easily be applied to people, circumstances, and occurrences that are around us at this very moment.

Getting Customer Referrals

When you make a sale of your products or services you’re going to get people talking.  The problem seems to be WHO is talking and WHAT are they talking about?   According to current marketing wisdom, one unhappy customer will tell 7 other people about their bad experience with a product or business. A happy customer will only tell ONE other person about their great experience. How can you beat these odds to get more of your satisfied customers to spread the word about your products and services?

The first way is to produce excellent content in a range of formats useful to the prospects in your niche, including:

- Articles

- Special reports on hot topics in your niche

- Videos on YouTube

- Images/infographics

- Webinars

- PowerPoint presentations on Slideshare (now owned by Linkedin)

- Emalls in your email marketing platform and autoresponder

- Ecourses

And more.

Use share buttons for all of these types of content. Many blogs have plugins that allow visitors to share the content at your site on many of the main social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Tumblr.  Publish original content on the networks that your followers can also share easily. You’ll not go wrong by giving your customers what they want, when they want it, it a format they are using, and straight talk about your specific niche.

To go viral means to spread rapidly from person to person in your niche.  We might also term it creating buzz about your products and service. Launch new products regularly can create buzz. Be willing to give away free review copies in exchange for testimonials to pass the word along about how good your products are.  Some times its very important to understand that by giving a little you can get a LOT!

A free webinar or workshop with Questions and Answers (Q & A) can also create buzz if you have a good reputation in your niche that would make people eager to attend so they can interact with you.  If you have NEW good ideas people will want to hear them from you.

Emails can be forwarded easily to friends and family. Ecourses are even better for viral marketing purposes if they are on an interesting niche topic. Similarly, special reports designed to get more email sign ups have a high potential of going viral.

YouTube is not just for entertainment. It is one of the largest search engines on the Internet as well. Don’t want to appear in front of the camera? Transform your best PowerPoint presentations into video and upload them in your YouTube account. Now it is easy to use an “avatar” in place of yourself, if you have to.

Create an affiliate program for your loyal customers so they can earn income by referring your products and services.  Form JV partnerships with those in your niche who are not direct competitors so you can all help each other with your viral marketing. Give them a chance to try your product so they will feel happy to use it and recommend it to others. Craft such attractive offers that any customer would be delighted with it and be glad to tell others about the terrific bargain they got.

In reference to your social networks, publish unique content as well in your accounts and within groups you have joined or created yourself, such as Facebook groups.  Your connections can share it with all their followers with just a click.  Don’t come off “pushy”, but let others know how informative you are.

Finally, just ask! You would be amazed at how many marketers, even top ones, forget to include a call to action that suggests if the reader liked the content or found it useful, they should feel free to share it with others.  I’ve heard a great ad promotion that included the ending phrase “If you’re unhappy with our service let me know.  If you like our services let others know.”  You may be surprised at how effective this direct approach can be!

Ways to Partner Effectively

SO --- you finally decided to put that business idea into implementation and have your new website go LIVE!  Hold on for just a few minutes.  Many new business owners get so excited at the thought of starting their own profitable company online that they do not look before they leap. They come up with what they think is a great new idea and start to try to sell it without doing proper market research to determine demand and what customers in the niche are willing to pay for products.  Other new business owners go to the opposite extreme and steer clear of certain top-earning niches because they think there is too much competition.  You can’t go to either extreme.

There is something you can do to help improve your chances of being successful in this new business venture.  One of the best ways to put yourself head and shoulders above the competition even in a crowded niche is to link yourself with key companies and influencers. In this way you can offer all new products and services, increase your authority in your niche, and earn more income all at the same time without exposing yourself to a tremendous amount of downside.

If you are giving serious consideration to making this new venture happen and want to be involved with little opportunity for failure then you need to follow one of the easiest way to accomplish this.  That is through:

          - Affiliate Marketing

          - Joint Venture Partnerships

          - Strategic Partnerships

Affiliate marketing is an excellent way to get to know the top people and companies in your industry.  There are a number of affiliate marketplaces that allow you to link up with top infiuencers, companies and products all in one location. The main ones for digital products are Clickbank and JV Zoo. The best ones for tangible products are CJ.com and LinkShare. Create your links once, paste at your site and in your marketing emails, and those links will keep on earning for you even when you are away from your computer.

In the process of finding affiliate products to sell, you will discover the top individuals and brands in your niche.  Make a list of them and their websites and email addresses.  Once you have a large email marketing list or are willing to be interviewed or contribute to a webinar about your niche, you can form Joint Venture (JV) Partnerships.

With JVs, you market together and split the proceeds 50/50.  If you have a mailing list of 500 people, for example, and your JV partner has a similarly sized list, propose mailing to each other’s list and splitting the cash. If their list is twice the size of yours, email 2 of their marketing messages instead of just one.  You can work out any agreeable procedure between yourselves.  Just make sure you recognize the “give and take” of this type of operation.

Strategic partnerships can be formed online or offline in a similar way. Partner with anyone who is not a direct competitor but sells complementary products and services. For example, if you sell wedding gowns, partner with other local merchants who can provide any of the other items commonly required for weddings, such as flowers, formal wear, limos and so on. If you give this a little thought you may be surprised at what types of partnerships you can think of creating.

One other useful way to find local partners is to offer an interesting workshop or talk at your local Chamber of Commerce. They will do all the marketing and promotion for the talk. You just need to deliver a great presentation. Those who get to meet you in this way might just want to partner with you, or know someone who does. Online networking is great, but don’t overlook the opportunities to forge relationships within the community, especially if you have a brick and mortar store.

Every business and entrepreneur is judged by the company they keep. Form relationships with the top movers and shakers in your niche and see what a difference it can make to your profits.

Is Your Business Hiding in Plain Sight?

If you feel that you are not getting the online attention you should maybe you need to enhance your online presence with some great niche-related features.

These days, any serious business owner with a brain in their head has a website or blog to help market their business. A website with your own domain name (URL) establishes a professional online presence and offers a central hub for all of your online and offline marketing efforts. However, if you have not updated your website recently or posted fresh content to it, it’s time to enhance your online presence to improve your chances of succeeding in a competitive niche.  If you don’t have any interest in your website who will?

If your website is more than a few years old, chances are it might not be mobile-friendly. With the boom in Smartphones and tablet computers, this should be your first enhancement.  It’s not a difficult thing to do, but you must make certain that it gets done and don’t rely on “I think it is!” mentality.

Second, do you have a blog? A blog is a fun and interesting way to present fresh niche-related content on a regular basis. Write the content, or commission it, upload it, and set the publication date.  Your blog will be updated regularly without you having to work on it every day.  Remember that even if the process is automated you will still need to check on it from time to time to make sure everything is going as planned.

If you are working in a small company or are a solo entrepreneur, you might be thinking that you have no idea how to do either of these task and have no budget to hire anyone. The good news is that you can kill two birds with one stone with a completely free program: WordPress. (www.wordpress.com )

There are two ways to accomplish this. The first is to set up a free blog at WordPress.com. This basic version of the program is mobile-friendly and will show you just how easy WordPress is to use.  Link to your site and vice versa to drive more traffic.

The second way to do this is to download a copy of the free program at WordPress.org and upload it to the main folder of your website, or to a subfolder, such as one called blog.  Install the program and start adding content.

The full version of WordPress includes 2 key items that can really help your niche business take off. The first are themes and the second are plugins.

Themes set the overall appearance and functionality of the site, such as a text-based blog versus a photo blog. Search through all the free professional-looking themes available to find the one that is right for the look and feel of your business.

Plugins are little mini-programs that add a range of functions and tools to your pages and site.  These can range from social media links that will let you promote your site on all your accounts and allow your customers to promote your site as well to a number of exciting niche options that will make your site a magnet for customers, such as:

- Auctions

- A forum or discussion board

- Top niche products lists with links to buy

- An article directory

- A membership site, free or paid

- A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) portal

And much more.

If your site isn’t getting the kind of traffic you want or enough repeat visitors, update your site/blog, add functionality, and see what a difference it can make to your profits.  Your business should be ever growing and to do that in the market of today you must periodically review your use of technology and make sure you are up-to-date on what is available and what is being used.  Otherwise you may become the “rotary phone” of your niche!

Your Viral Salesman: E-books!

E-books are the future and the future is now. Well, at least that’s my opinion.  The printed word on paper and bound into books used to be the only way information was given and received. They were great, you could take them with you and put them on shelves and they do still exist and will continue to for the foreseeable future but the time of the E-book has arrived.

The marketing E-book is a slightly different animal from just an E-book. Marketing E-books contain text, images, links to web pages and navigation controls. The marketing E-book has become a very important part of marketing on the Internet.  It will always be to your advantage to use the most up-to-date means to marketing your business opportunities.

With a marketing E-book you can present your story in an effective way and include links to your web sales pages. Your E-book can become your best salesman. And who would know the best way to promote your business story than YOU?

First, your E-book needs to be interesting and informative. It always has links back to your web site and to your sales page.  You should NEVER miss an opportunity to promote your products or services!

Next, be sure that you have a prominent section telling readers that they are free to give your E-book away. Let them know that they can post it on their site as a free download, that they can use it as a bonus, and that they can bundle it with other products. This is the way to create viral marketing for your products or services. Remember those links back to your site contained in the E-book?  You will gain tremendous advantages by allowing others to “distribute” your marketing message by means of your E-book.  And this is ZERO expense for you to promote your business to all of their contacts.

Last but certainly not least before you send your E-book out to the world, double check spelling and grammar and be sure that you have tested every link to verify that it goes where it is supposed to go. Obvious errors will reflect badly on you and will not be of much value to you, it could even by damaging. Once an individual becomes frustrated by your non-functioning E-book links they will simply delete your marketing message from their computer.  There will be NO continuation of your viral efforts.

Post your E-book to some of the E-book directories. Many let you post it for free, or will let you post a link on their site to your E-book.  Remember you have to get the “ball rolling”.  This means YOU have to start the process of getting your viral marketing message out into the world.  Then you will be surprised at how quickly it can “snowball” into a super marketing success.

E-mail Viral Marketing WORKS!

You NEVER want to be sick!  But it just may be a good thing for your marketing campaign to get a virus!  What does a virus have to do with marketing you may ask? Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message's exposure and influence. Like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands and then to millions.

Public health nurses offer sage advice during the flu season: stay away from people who cough, wash your hands often, and don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Viruses only spread when they're easy to transmit. Viral e-mail marketing works great on the Internet because instant communication has become so easy and inexpensive. Digital format makes copying simple. From a marketing standpoint, you must simplify your marketing message so it can be transmitted easily and without degradation. Shorter is better. Remember the K.I.S.S. standard….Keep it Simple Stupid.  The shorter and easier to remember your marketing message is always better than long and complicated.

Clever viral marketing plans take advantage of common human motivations. The desire to be cool and greed drives people. So does the hunger to be popular, loved, and understood. The resulting urge to communicate produces millions of websites and billions of e-mail messages.  Take advantage of what is only human nature to begin with.

Most people are social. Nerdy, basement-dwelling computer science grad students are the exception. Social scientists tell us that each person has a network of 8 to 12 people in their close network of friends, family, and associates. People on the Internet develop networks of relationships, too. They collect e-mail addresses and favorite website URLs. Affiliate programs exploit such networks, as do permission e-mail lists. Learn to place your message into existing communications between people, and you rapidly multiply its dispersion.

If you can design a marketing strategy that builds on common motivations and behaviors for its transmission, you have a winner.  And when you have a winner it’s only a winner for your business.  It’s easy:  Play on the greed to succeed!

Viral Marketing: What Works and What Doesn't

Do you like receiving unwanted e-mails?  E-mails that jam your inbox until you can no longer receive any legitimate correspondence that you are waiting to get?  Then DON’T do it to others! Stop with the enforced e-mail forwards already! Trying to force or bribe people to forward your info to a friend or family member in order to be rewarded just doesn’t work in today's ultra-permission-based world. Especially when you tell visitors nothing about their friend's or family’s privacy in the space directly next to the e-mail form.

A true viral campaign gets forwarded because consumers are compelled to do so by the glory of the content, not because you bribed them with points or something else. They have found something that they REALLY enjoyed themselves and are thereby compelled to allow their friends and family members to have the same enjoyment.

What absolutely will not work?  Suggesting that e-mail recipients forward your message to their friends and family will not work. Adding a line at the bottom of your e-mail that reads “Please feel free to forward this message to a friend” is more likely to get it deleted than forwarded. And you don’t want to sound like you are wanting them to donate to some charity case: YOU!

What absolutely will work?   Offering something worthy of sharing like a valuable discount, vital information, or offering an incentive for sharing additional entries into a sweepstakes or an added discount or premium service will work. Even using a great SHORT video may be just the thing that works for them.

Relevant or timely information, research, or studies that are included in your e-mail might encourage the recipients to share with their family and friends. Interactive content like a quiz or test, especially if it’s fun, will inspire forwarding.

Jokes and cartoons are almost always forwarded to everybody the recipient knows.  Why?  Because they are entertaining and entertainment is meant to be shared.  So work on your ability to tell a good joke!  “Have you heard the one about ---?”

A really cool multimedia experience is always going to achieve a lot of pass-along. Rich media is new and the novelty and tech factors alone are often enough to make the e-mail recipient eager to share it.  You know those videos about the silly things that cats and dogs do are irresistible.

Oops!  I almost forgot one really important thing….You can craft a brilliant e-mail following all the rules, but if a consumer visits your site and has an experience less than what was promised, you are going to achieve viral marketing, alright…the bad kind.  So be certain that your product or service is ready and is as advertised.  Promise your visitor a great experience and then OVER deliver!

Have You Tried E-books?

An E-book that includes your marketing message and a link to your website is a proven technique in viral marketing. This method uses the multiplication effect to “explode” the distribution of your message by willing participants.  Those enjoying your E-book will not only visit your site, but will also recommend it to others for their enjoyment.  Thereby inducing them to also visit your site.

This is the basic principle that was used by Hotmail to get established. When the two founders set up their free email system, all the messages that were sent by subscribers had a text message at the bottom which identified Hotmail as the origin. People who sent emails to their friends advertised the free email site.  And the rest is history, as they say.

Using viral E-books as a marketing method is cheap. It doesn’t take long to set up and it’s even quicker if you use rebrandable E-books that have been written by others. Just use your favorite search engine and do a web search. You will find many rebrandable E-books that are available on whatever subject you are interested in and that apply to your e-business. One method of distributing the E-book is to offer it to visitors in exchange for subscribing to your newsletter. If they pass it on to their friends and family it will promote your business for you.

E-books are capable of reaching a large audience and are limited only by the enthusiasm of the participants.  E-books are fairly easy to create. It’s possible to produce your own E-books by combining articles that you have written or have gotten from public domain sources, such as directories.  If you have some really good and unique ideas on subjects within your niche you may find that combining them into an interesting E-books is a simple task.  It probably won’t take as long as you might think!

However, another common approach is to use material that has Private Label Rights, including articles and reports that have been written specifically for that purpose, for your niche. Using a portion of a larger work that you have prepared such as the first three chapters of a large E-book could also be used as a viral E-book.

However you choose to use your E-book you will find that there are many benefits that you will receive.  So when should you get started using this incredible method to advance your viral marketing promotions? --- NOW!

Using Forums for your Viral Marketing

A forum is a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.  There are different types of forums, beyond the obvious topical types, of “marketing” or “special interest”, etc.  “Marketing” and “special interest” are two types of what are commonly referred to as “open forums”.

There are, however, business and professional forums, which do not operate under the same rules and, more often than not, disallow any and all types of advertising or self-promotion. Forums that have been created to support the membership of a particular program are especially adamant on this topic and often demand that all members refrain from all types of advertising on their sites.

Still, even with all these hurdles, it is possible to successfully advertise in forums. In all cases a pre-requisite for success is developing a good reputation and a good relationship with the other members of the forum and with the moderator and then maintaining both. So, while it is true that this a form of free advertising, it does require a certain amount of investment as far as time and energy are concerned, not to mention subtly and finesse.

To successfully market on any forum, the first requirement is to take a personal interest in the main topic of the forum. That means visiting it on a regular basis and developing a good relationship with the members and the moderators. It, also, means taking an active role in the conversations and being willing to help others. Of course, it goes without saying that it means abiding by any and all rules that exist. In this way, you can develop a reputation (a GOOD one), and business will just naturally develop because humans tend to work with people they trust.

Since the main purpose of a forum is the exchange of information and/or ideas, marketers must respect that objective and abide by it. Marketing forums, where everyone there has something to advertise and sell, usually have even more stringent rules.

It’s not difficult to locate a forum that may be of interest to you.  Just Google “marketing forums” if that is what you are looking for.  Then you can search through your results.  Just make sure you are willing to invest the time and efforts that will be required from you.  With regards to your reputation on ANY forum: “If you build it, they will come!”

Get Your Viral Marketing Mobile

Where will you be going today?  You’ll always find yourself out and about for one reason or another.  How did we ever get things done when we had to “stay by the phone” because of that terrible CORD?  Everything today is “on the go.”  We are no longer a society that stays located in permanent locations while performing our daily tasks.  Mobile devices, mobile phones and PDA’s are one of the last great frontiers of viral advertisement opportunities. However, we have become experts at filtering everything, our air and water, our e-mail and pop-ups, and our mobile devices as well. We are good at filtering, blocking, or just ignoring things that seem to upset us.  Regardless we find ourselves always wanting to be "connected", just in case something develops that we do not want to miss.

However, the very idea of unwanted advertising streaming through our cell phones is abhorrent to some people. Mobile devices are the ultimate opt-in medium and, therefore, a great way for marketers to connect with users…if that’s what the users want. “WANT” is the key word here. How should marketers approach the medium?

There are three main ways to achieve this. They are:

1.         Offer exclusive content. Anyone can offer ring tones. It’s the unique content, such as exclusive mobile images of new brand concepts, that drives interest and calls them out in other media like e-mail campaigns, newsletters, websites, etc. So a wireless campaign is most effective when it offers exclusive content for wireless devices.

2.         Make it useful and timely. Think about what would be handy and helpful to have on a mobile device. What do you think would be helpful to you?  In the past, for example, Food Network enabled Sprint customers to download shopping lists for their Thanksgiving dinners. There was a lot of “Sprint-envy” going around among non-sprint customers.

3.         Clearly define objectives. Usually, one of two business objectives drives successful mobile experiences: incremental revenue of brand intimacy for example. On the intimacy factor, a text message usually takes priority over almost any other form of communication. Why? Because we haven’t yet been saturated with mobile spam, and this is what causes us to prioritize wireless messaging over voice or to perhaps even begin to “block” certain numbers on our phones.

Mobile marketing has been out there for a while but we marketers have new territory to explore. Video offers fantastic opportunities for engagement. Consumers already bypass their filters for highly useful or entertaining content and will do so for rich exclusive, compelling content.  If you haven’t begun to use this marketing media it may be one you want to look in to.  You may be surprised at the success of your efforts!

Using Video in Your Marketing

We have become a society where it is easier to WATCH something instead of reading about it.  I recall growing up and hearing (and on occasions saying):  “I don’t have time to read the book.  I’ll wait for the movie.”  More and more advertisers are adopting video as broadband continues to rise and ad-serving technologies become more sophisticated.  Your marketing campaigns can go viral like WILD FIRES!

Online video advertising is really taking off. Users’ attention can be captured and ads stand out from the crowd in an increasingly ad-cluttered online environment. It is true that video formats cost five to ten times more to serve than standard banners and they involve a lot more production and implementation work but they may well be worth all of that if they achieve greater response rates.

Where to use online video if wishing to maximize its effect, is what advertisers must carefully consider. Video to be used on the Internet should be information and communication focused while video to be used on television should be focused on entertainment.

Like everything else, there are good ways and bad ways to use video advertising. Right now most marketers are incorporating their audio-visual content into existing embedded ad formats like banners or over-content formats like pop-ups. Though this could reach a potentially large audience, viewers are likely to be less captivated and more annoyed by these disruptive and distracting placements.

Cached or streaming video on a specific destination site offers the best chance of interesting consumers in brand messages, but it is not likely to reach a large audience unless it generates a viral outcome.

Whatever you come up with, don't forget to make it easy to open and distribute. File size is important, as is the media format. If your viral video has been created for a particular type of software that not many people use, how will you get people to spread it like wildfire?

Also, if you've made a video the impact will be better if you send the clip as an attachment rather than stream it. It's cheaper and, if you're not hosting it, it's more viral, too.

We’re strange creatures.  Our attention span is truly limited today.  Make sure your video is short and to the point.  Lengthier videos can be used on other occasions however your initial contact will produce greater impact if it is brief.

Viral Marketing with Forums

Recently, forum marketing has been touted as a kind of free, organic, viral marketing. But because so many marketers go into forums purely with the intention of marketing products or services, their actions and attitude unwittingly cause the exact opposite of the desired effect.

Forums aren’t marketplaces but when used as such, the marketers’ actions become offensive and will only inspire the wrath of fellow members and marketers, not to mention moderators who can ban them from the site with the click of their mouse.

In order to be effective, this kind of marketing carries a certain degree of commitment, responsibility, and respect. The first requirement is to take a personal interest in the main topic of the forum. Not only does that mean visiting it regularly, but it also means developing a good relationship with both other members and the moderators, as well as taking an active interest in helping others. Of course, it also means abiding by all the rules that exist. By doing this, one can develop a reputation and, since it is human nature to work with a trusted colleague, business will naturally develop from this.

This type of marketing has already suffered some abuse and because of this, many forums have recently developed stringent rules designed to protect their members from abusive or overly-aggressive marketing tactics. One forum grants sig files only after a member has created one hundred valid posts and another has disallowed ads in sig files altogether.

Marketers must respect that the purpose of a forum is to be a platform to exchange ideas on a given topic. It is not there to advertise products and services. By focusing on the topic and posting questions and answers, a marketer’s reputation will grow and this creates the potential for sales naturally. You MUST focus on the forum topic and create yourself as a professional in that subject.

Everyone knows you want to sell your services and/or products, but using a forum platform you must first follow the rules and establish yourself as the “go to” person within that field.
