I’m sure that all of us have at one time or another thought about what we would do if unexpectedly we came into possession of a large sum of money. You probably have your own ideas, but I thought I’d like to share mine. Lets’ remember I’m talking about a LARGE sum of money and also I’ll consider NO time constraints. That being the case I’m going to talk about vacations: the ULTIMATE vacation!
Actually my ultimate vacation is broken down into three stages: Stage one is a ninety day trip from our home in Colorado through all the eastern states making a loop from the north to the south and back. Stage two is likewise about forty-five days traveling from our home in Colorado through the western part of the country (including Alaska) following a similar north-south loop. The third stage of the trip would be “Around the World in ? Days.” How would these vacations actually be planned? I’m going to give you a break-down of each stage in this and the next two blog posts. Remember money is NO object, so I won't always talk about certain specifics, but I will mention some.
Stage one and two consider trips by auto to visit ALL the forty-eight contiguous states and Alaska. We would not necessarily visit the “tourist” locations per se but could find ourselves looking more at the scenic aspects of the national parks, although there would certainly be some specified locations that we would like to visit. When I discuss Stage Three we will be talking about using a private jet charter for transportation.
In Stage One we would travel north up the eastern side of Colorado and go into Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Then we would go east, turning south and traveling through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Indian, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Main. We might try slipping into Nova Scotia before making a turn to travel down the east coast.
Traveling back through a portion of Maine and New Hampshire we would pick up the trip going through Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey. The trip would continue through Delaware and Maryland with a stopover in Washington, DC. We lived in that area for over four years so we’d probably have to see how things have changed. Then we would continue through Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky. Retracing part of Illinois and Missouri we would travel through Arkansas and Tennessee. Now we would drive into South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and back up through Alabama. Obviously being from Georgia and spending many vacations in Florida when I was growing up we would need to spend some extra time in these locations. This would start the final leg of our trip westward as we begin to travel home.
We would go through Mississippi, Louisiana, and catch the eastern part of Texas. After that we would turn north into Oklahoma and Kansas before re-entering Colorado and bringing our trip to a conclusion.
We would probably make some of this trip an examination of the country’s national parks. Some of the highlights would be in visiting Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. For more than two hundred years people have used the hot springs to treat illness and to relax. In Florida we could plan on visiting Everglades National Park. It’s the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. We might be able to site an American crocodile, Florida panther, or a West Indian manatee. I really fell in love with these docile creatures on a trip to Florida several years ago and have collected many sculptures of the creatures. In Luray, Virginia we could visit Shenandoah National Park and take Skyline Drive along the crest of the mountains through the woods and past spectacular vistas.
And as we plan this three month (?) trip many other National Park visits would need to be considered. While planning and getting down to more specific details we might have to decide that three months would not be enough time to visit and enjoy all the places we wanted to include so an extension of our time line might become necessary. This brief information has only been to develop our Stage One trip. My next blog post will consider the plans for Stage Two: The Western Trip!
